Functions of Benzoic Acid: Corrosion Inhibitor, Plasticizer, Catalyst and Lubricant

In the Petroleum and Drilling Industry

  • Corrosion Inhibition: Industrial – grade benzoic acid can react chemically with the metal surface to form a protective film, which inhibits the oxidation and corrosion of metals in the petroleum and drilling environments. For example, in metal components such as petroleum extraction equipment and drilling pipes, adding corrosion inhibitors containing benzoic acid can extend the service life of the equipment and reduce the risks of leakage and damage caused by corrosion.
  • pH Adjustment: In drilling fluids, benzoic acid and its salts can be used to adjust the pH of the system and maintain the chemical stability of the drilling fluid. An appropriate pH can prevent clay swelling and improve the rheological properties of the drilling fluid, which helps to increase drilling efficiency and wellbore stability.

In the Resin Industry

  • Plasticizer Raw Material: Benzoic acid can serve as an intermediate for the production of benzoates and phthalates, and then be used to prepare resin plasticizers. Such as diethylene glycol dibenzoate (DEDB), triethylene glycol dibenzoate (TEDB), and dipropylene glycol dibenzoate (DPGDB), etc., which are widely used in polyvinyl chloride resins, polyvinyl acetate resins, and polyester resins. These plasticizers can weaken the secondary valence bonds between resin molecules, increase the mobility of resin molecular bonds, reduce the crystallinity of resin molecules, enhance the flexibility of the resin, making it easier to process and form, and also improve the cold – resistance and impact – resistance of the products.
  • Resin Performance Improvement: In alkyd resins, benzoic acid and its salts can terminate the chain growth of alkyd resin polymers and promote the crystallinity of the products. After introducing benzoic acid into alkyd resins, the drying speed of the paint film can be accelerated. Moreover, compared with alkyd resins modified by styrene, the paint films made from it perform better in terms of gloss, hardness, water – resistance, and chemical corrosion – resistance.

In the Catalyst Field

Benzoic acid can act as a co – catalyst or a component of the catalyst support in some specific chemical reactions. For example, in certain organic synthesis reactions, it may participate in regulating the active center of the reaction and affecting the adsorption and desorption processes of reactants, thereby influencing the reaction rate and selectivity. However, its specific role depends on the reaction system.

In the Aspect of Plasticizers

Industrial – grade benzoic acid is an important raw material for synthesizing certain plasticizers. Plasticizers are used in the construction industry to improve the properties of polymer materials (such as plastic pipes, door and window sealing strips, etc.). They can reduce the melting temperature of the materials, increase their plasticity and flexibility, making them easier to process and form. At the same time, they can also improve the strength and durability of plastic products, meeting the requirements of different application scenarios in the construction field.
